Color Groupings for Art DirectorsÑ1
Complimentary Colors
These are colors that are directly across from each other on the color wheel.
Opposite colors on the wheel are useful for developing bold, vibrant logos or designs. These simple, "two color" combos provide a lot of impact and flexibility.
However, these colors can be limiting and lack versatility. Sometimes they can vibrate, and while this is at times good at other times it's distracting. This can be countered by introducing a neutral or gray into the combo. The last disadvantage is that if you use the colors "straight", ie, not tones or tints, the colors can be a little too "holiday-like". An example of this is green and red for Christmas or purple and yellow for Easter.
As monitors are not consistent, PMS or RGB numbers aren't given here. These combos are starting points for you to develop your own groupings with your own PMS numbers.
